Self-help, participation and health.
13.12.2011
The 15th of September in 2010 HiNT invites to a seminar entitled "Self-help, participation and health." The aim of the seminar is to facilitate focus on development, planning, knowledge and research on self-help efforts and make it available to users, patient organizations, professional and students in health care and social services, and educational institutions, politicians or others that may have an interest in this topic.
Self-help groups can be seen to be a way to revitalize health services and create self-sustaining processes for people who are struggling with health or a life difficulty. Self-help can challenge traditional roles and skills in health care and social services.
Self-help is focused on self-mastery and user influence in the health care sector. Self-understanding recognizes that all people have inherent resources that can be activated, re-captured and mobilized if illness or a life difficulty arises. Thus, such understanding is the basis for the Norwegian Health authorities' commitment to the use and focus on self-help as an instrument of health promotion.
Self-Help should not be seen as a relief for the public responsibilities in health, but rather be addressed as a complement or alternative to professional help.
