Global health and cultural competence

Innledning
The world is becoming more and more globalized characterized by increasing migration and international collaboration between countries and institutions. Nurses should be prepared for giving nursing care in a multicultural society in their home country as well as internationally since many nurses cross borders and work abroad. This requires knowledge about the challenges represented by ethnic, religious and cultural diversities. Transcultural nursing requires knowledge and skills in cultural awareness and intercultural communication. Furthermore, nurses needs to be knowledgeable about the main global health challenges and the determinants of health and diseases. This course aims to draw the students' attention to these challenges, and provide the students with knowledge and understanding for their development of a professional nursing and culture care competence.

The students have broad knowledge about:
- major health challenges represented by the global burden of diseases
- different views on health, disease and illness
- intercultural communication
- culture and values
The students have developed communication skills to communicate interculturally
The students have acquired insight on culture care diversity and universality that are necessary for them to develop culture congruent nursing care
Innhold
The course is taught over the period of two weeks (week 11 and 12, 2010).
Introduction to all themes are given during the first week followed by self study and writing an academic paper or essay the second week.
The course gives an introduction to the following themes:
- Epidemiological terms and definitions
- Global burden of diseases with emphasis on tuberculosis and HIV
- Culture care diversity and universality
- Health beliefs, disease and illness
- Intercultural communication
Arbeids- og undervisningsformer
The course will be conducted in English
Week 1: The teaching will be given by lectures, discussions and group activities
Week 2: Self study and writing of an academic paper under the guidance of an advisor
Vurderingsordning
Paper.
The students work in groups and write an academic paper of maximum 2500 words.
The paper is handed in on Friday the second week of the course, and is assessed as passed or not passed.
