The aim of this project is to establish contact with schools in other countries in order to provide HiNT students with an opportunity to do practice teaching abroad. Until 1999, HiNT students normally did their practice teaching in local schools. But in October 2000, as a result of the contact I had established with two schools in Latvia, six students had the opportunity to take part an alternative form of practice teaching there. Three students visited a school in Riga and three, a school in Daugavpils.
The pilot project was successful, and the students found the experience very rewarding. They felt the opportunity expanded their horizons by giving them a chance to experience the country, its people, its culture, and of course, its educational system. My task during the 2000-2001 shool year was to expand this project to include 4 other countries where HiNT students can do their alternative practice in the fall of 2001. But this number has been surpassed, and there are now 9 different countries participating in the program.
Students who choose this form of practice will have to submit letters of application. Successful candidates will then be assigned to the various schools where they will spend 10 school days observing classes, assisting and teaching (when language permits). The students will be asked to submit a report upon completion of the practice period. One copy of the report will be given to the host school and the other to the Practice Teaching Cordinator at HiNT.
